6 Tips for a Healthy Pet Diet
A nutritious diet plays an important role in pet’s overall health and longevity. Nutritious food provides your animal companion with the vitamins, minerals and nutrients it needs to grow, play, and age well.
Our veterinarian can help you determine which foods are best for your pet’s health, depending on your pet’s age and overall health. We can also help you determine how much you should feed your dog or cat, and if you should give your pet supplements.
Provide Your Pet with Fresh Water at Least Once Each Day
Accounting for 60 to 70 percent of a pet’s body weight, water is essential for life. Make sure your pet has steady access to fresh, clean water at all times.
Go Easy on the Treats
Treats should account for no more than 10 percent of your pet’s total intake. The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) requires nutrition labels for pet foods. They do not require such labels for treats, however, so treats may not contain nutritious ingredients.
Say No to Scraps
Resist sharing “people food” with your pets, as this can lead to obesity. Furthermore, the human food you share may not be good for your pets.
Adjust Your Pet’s Diet Over Time
Nutrition needs change over time. An older dog does not burn as many calories as a young dog, for example, so you may need to feed your older dog less to help it avoid unwanted weight gain.
Consider Nutritional Supplements
Some pets need extra vitamins or minerals for good health.
